La segona llei de Newton es pot fer servir per predir l’acceleració d’una partícula P quan es coneixen totes les forces d’interacció que la resta de partícules (Q) exerceixen sobre ella ([math]\displaystyle{ \overline{\mathbf{F}}_{\mathrm{Q} \rightarrow \mathrm{P}} }[/math]), o per calcular les que calen per garantir un moviment predeterminat ([math]\displaystyle{ \overline{\mathbf{O}_\Rs\mathbf{P}}(\ts) }[/math]).
Aquesta secció tracta de les forces d’interacció entre partícules, tant formulables com no formulables. Formular una interacció és trobar una expressió matemàtica que permeti calcular el seu valor a cada instant a partir del coneixement de l’estat mecànic de les partícules i de constants associades al tipus de fenomen d’interacció. Quan una força no és formulable, és una incògnita del problema dinàmic.
D2.1 Dependència cinemàtica de les forces d’interacció
D’acord amb el Principi de la Determinació, a cada instant de temps t les forces d’interacció entre dues partícules P i Q només poden dependre de la posició i la velocitat de les partícules en aquest instant de temps:
